MediaSmartOnline campaign

MediaSmartOnline campaign

The Better Internet for Kids (BIK) initiative launched the MediaSmartOnline campaign all across the EU on 24 October, the first day of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week, and running until Safer Internet Forum 2024 on 21 November.

What is the campaign about?

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about all the media literacy actions and initiatives that are currently available for children and young people, and those who are working to upskill them (parents and caregivers, teachers and educators). It is rolled out in cooperation with the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres and the Media & Learning Association. Learn more about the background of the campaign here.

The EU media literacy landscape is characterised by a wide variety of different players and activities, some based on very local, small-scale initiatives while others represent significant ongoing efforts on the part of governments and other agencies. This landscape also reflects the various positions and understanding that people have of the very term ‘media literacy’ and the fact that those active in the field have often operated in different ‘silos’ related to their specific interests. This lack of a common approach to promoting media literacy, and lack of opportunities for sinergies and collaboration constitutes the background for MediaSmartOnline, which aims to progressively bridge these gaps in the EU. After a successful piloting phase in March and April 2024 in three European countries, activities are now scaling to the wide-EU level.

Be MediaSmartOnline: guide to media literacy initiatives in Europe

Based on the extensive and resourceful materials collected in the mapping exercise of the EU media literacy landscape, and on the consultation of the network of Safer Internet Centres all across Europe, the new guide “Be MediaSmartOnline: guide to media literacy initiatives in Europe” collects together the many media literacy programmes, actions, trainings, campaigns and other initiatives currently available across Europe.

The guide is available as HTML, PDF, and CSV to suit your needs. You can browse based on country, language, type of media literacy action, and target audience.
