Explained: What is Twitter?

On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey, a computer programmer from Missouri, sent the world’s first ‘tweet’. “Just setting up my twttr,” he posted to his new website. Although it might not have appeared groundbreaking, Dorsey’s five-word missive would change online communications forever. In just a few short months, Twitter, Dorsey’s website, had gone viral. Hundreds of thousands of people had signed up and the web was awash with tweets.
