Safer Internet Day 2024 in Ireland

Thousands of people in schools, clubs and organisations around Ireland are taking part in the Safer Internet Day 2024 celebrations!

This year’s theme is Tech in Our World – exploring young people’s views on new and emerging technology, and the changes they would like to see online. 2023 has seen lots of big changes in the online world with the birth of generative AI, important new EU and national regulation, the appointment of an online safety commissioner in Ireland.

This Safer Internet Day Webwise are encouraging schools, children, teens, parents to:

– Reflect: An opportunity to reflect on tech in their world, the challenges, opportunities and big changes.

– Recognise: Give learners an understanding of the influence of digital technology in their daily life, exploring the concept persuasive design and the influence of algorithms.

– Reset: Learn tips to help reset our online experiences and empower young people to make the most of their online world

There is still time to get involved and participate in one of the many activities taking place – here are some of the events happening for #SID2024.

What do young people think of new and emerging technology?

The Safer Internet Day 2024: Tech in Our World event at #MSDreamSpace explored young people’s views on new and emerging technology, and the changes they would like to see online, and will be live-streamed for students and teachers to view and participate in.

Hosted by Claire Brock (Virgin Media) the event featured contributions from the Webwise Youth Advisory Panel, Online Safety Commissioner; Niamh Hodnett, National Technology Officer; Microsoft – Kieran McCorry and Dr Emma Murphy; School of Computer Science – TU Dublin.

More than 100 people at the in-person event, and many more online, took part in discussions which explored some of the opportunities and challenges as they relate to the role of the internet in young people’s lives.

Ahead of the event, children and young people from Ireland, Wales, and England told us about the one change they would like to see online.

This event is organised by the Irish Safer Internet Centre

The Irish Safer Internet Centre is a partnership of four leading organisations – Webwise, Hotline.ie, ISPCC and National Parents Council Primary, with a mission to make the Internet a better place for children and young people, under the coordination of the Department of Justice – Cybercrime Division

Safer Internet Day events around Ireland

Hundreds of events in schools, clubs and organisations will be taking place right across the country for Safer Internet Day.

Here are just some of the highlights!

• Sacred Heart School: Safer Internet Day plans include a rap performance, workshop on internet safety, cake baking with an internet safety theme, poster competition, AI survey, AI picture game and real-life story, online presence demonstration, interactive presentation and activities, surprise from the SID team, debate club discussions, safety tips, social media awareness, and a checklist. We aim to empower students with online safety knowledge.
• St. Colmcille School: We intend to join the live-stream of the Safer Internet Day “Tech in Our World” event and use the free Webwise resources for school.
• Leixlip YouthReach: A joint project between teachers of IT and SPHE to cover Coco’s Law and the complexity that the Internet has brought to the important relationships in our lives.
• YouthReach Transition Centre: Students will learn about their digital footprint, laws around smishing, phishing, cocos law, cyberbullies
